Chapter 8
âMy Best Description of my Father around 1972.â
What is very important to the reader at this point in the story is for me to the best of my ability and observations to paint a picture of the physical, as well as nature of Jack Albert Collins.
Jack was somewhat tall at 6â1, his age about 45 years old. He was somewhat balding but on a good day using his hairbrush and after shampooing it was hard to tell. His eyes blue, not of a light nature but somewhat darker. He was very polite and of general good nature. He was usually in control, calm, reassuring, and not prone to panic. He was a generally hard working self-made individual and physically slightly stooped, his word and handshake firm. His family (although he made mistakes in his personal life) was very important to him. He once, actually more than once, stated that he was scared to death of poverty. He never looked down upon those who struggled or were misfortunate but he didnât want to be one of them either.
He was intelligent, possessing a very high IQ. He read a lot, mainly speed reading newspapers, but absorbing history, especially about airplanes, pilots, WWII, and loved to read about, and had a fascination with, gangsters.
He loved royalty , as in England, and almost anything Canadian, Australian, or of a pioneering nature. He admired courage, or as one of my five brothers once said over a drink, âHe had great big balls made of steelâ.
My dad (which is what I called him) was a character. Most folks who knew him liked him and respected him. However, if a person didnât like him it was not a problem for my father. He would simply move on, rarely criticizing and usually actually saying something nice about that person. Like his brother Bud, he was a perfectionist. He was a sharp, well- dressed man and almost, although not always, wore a hat as well as a large gold and ruby ring and matching gold watch, both inscribed with âThe Franklin Life Insurance Companyâ or âMember, the Million Dollar Round Tableâ . He later studied estate planning, and became a financial planner.
Years ago, I once asked him how he got those beautiful pieces of gold jewelry. His reply was, âI earned themâ. When I asked him to elaborate he simply said, âIf a man is to do something â do it right. No half measures. Iâm a salesman and a long time ago I decided to look like one. My job now is to prevent, as much as possible, poor widows and destitute families and to make it possible for folks to have some real cash in their older ageâ. And that, he said, was the reason for the watch and ring.
